![]() ![]() Character interactions drive the show, and they drive the show pretty well. There is no general plot whatsoever, as every episode is pretty standalone but with recurring characters. All in all, there is nothing to complain about in the sound department. Jouji Nakata, the manly voice of Alucard from Hellsing and Giroro from Keroro Gunsou, also plays a significant role. Elise is played by Mamiko Noto, the delicious voice behind Mois in Keroro Gunsou, Punie is played by Satou Rina, who uses a voice completely different from another one of her famous roles: Negi Springfield from Negima. Punie’s two younger sisters, Pyun and Potaru, may seem like the cutest sisters at first glance, but in Dai Mahou Touge, everything is different from first glances. Other recurring characters include Anego, the gag character who is always getting pummeled, and Tetsuko, the train maniac. Punie has a mascot named Paya, and he’s anything but generic. There’s Elise von Barbaroque, the real princess of the Magical Kingdom, until Punie’s mom Esmeralda flawlessly executed a coup d'état. The recurring characters are also a hoot to see. There are many more, but I’m not well versed enough or nerdy enough to find everything. ![]() A partial list of the things being parodied include World War II, Vietnam, Fist of the North Star, Communism, Nazism, Initial D, and many more. In the following 100 minutes, you will see parody after parody after parody that they will make your head swirl. Dai Mahou Touge is nothing like your regular magical girl show. The last sentence of the last paragraph was a lie. Once on Earth, Punie uses her magical powers to woo over the hearts of her classmates, make friends, crap roses and rainbows, and create a happy place for everyone. Being a distinctly Japanese animation, Earth consists entirely of the island country of Japan. Anyway, Punie heads off to Earth to a public high school in order to learn the culture of Earth. This four episode OAV series focuses on the adventures of Punie, a magical girl from a magical land called the Magical Kingdom (Yes, it sounds cheesy already). Dai Mahou Touge has all of that and more. When one thinks of magical girl shows, these images usually pop up: Wands, cute little girls, cheesy spells, transformations that borderline between cute and pedophilic, etc. The most violent magical girl show ever created.
